This little plot-bunny has been harassing me for a while now. Any ideas would be *much* appreciated.

What if Gandalf had *not* died in Moria?

Imagine that all other canon factors are still in place. Answer with whatever you think might have happened, but try not to carry it out too far -- leave some room for someone to add on. For example, Bob could write "Boromir wouldn't go crazy." and Larry could add "And then Frodo wouldn't have left the fellowhip." If you don't agree with what someone else thought would be the outcome, post your own idea -- if you think Frodo would have left, take advantage of the way the LJ comment system works and start a new branch of that train of thought.

He would not have come back as Gandalf the White and therefore would not have been a match for Saruman.

Aragorn would not have been forced to decide which direction the Fellowship should head once they emerged from the Mines. Gandalf would've made that decision instead.

I think they probably still would have gone to Lorien, though...

The battle of Amon Hen would have turned out much differently, given that Gandalf is now a part of it.

Merry and Pippin may not have been kidnapped at Amon Hen, either, had Gandalf not died. Then they would not have followed the Uruk-Hai who took them, and not stirred up the Ents. Or come to the aid of Rohan.

If you follow that through, there wouldn't have been a Scouring of the Shire, right? Because the Ents wouldn't have destroyed Isengard, so Saruman wouldn't have left.

And Saruman would have taken Rohan, since Aragorn & Co. didn't come to their aid. Then he would have been able to attack Gondor, too.

No -- remember, Saruman had been sending men into the Shire for quite a while; Merry and Pippin found Longbottom Leaf among the flotsam and jetsam of Isengard.

Yes, but that was covert, right? Of course the Shire would be attacked, sooner or later, but Saruman needn't have gone there, because he would still hold Isengard.

Boromir would probably have lived, 'cause Gandalf would have seen the weirdness of the ring affecting him, and intervened somehow. Perhaps the Fellowship would have stuck together, but which way would they have gone?

Yeah... That's one of my biggest problems. Where *would* they have gone? If they went off to Mordor, would they have met Gollum? WOuld they have gotten caught by Orcs, being nine, not three? And so on... o.0
