This is one of my favorite AUs ever (and when done well, makes a damn good fic):

What if Harry had been sorted in Slytherin?

Imagine that all other canon factors are still in place. Answer with whatever you think might have happened, but try not to carry it out too far -- leave some room for someone to add on. For example, Joey could write "Ron would eternally hate him and never talk to him" and Karen could add "And then Hermione would have never been saved by the troll." If you don't agree with what someone else thought would be the outcome, post your own idea -- if you think Hermione is the one who'll hate him, take advantage of the way the LJ comment system works and start a new branch of that train of thought.

Some of the Slytherins (Draco comes to mind) would reject him for having a muggleborn mother.

And Harry wouldn't be able to play Quidditch at all...

I'd disagree. He's the Boy Who Lived, I imagine that they would have made a bit of an exception. I mean, Draco was buttering him up on the train, and I imagine Draco knew about Harry's, erm, pedigree from Lucius. And I'm sure Lucius would tell Draco that getting Harry on his good side would be a strategic move and, if Daddy said so, I'm sure Draco would play along.

In any case, being in the same house probably means no Midnight Duel, which means no finding Fluffy...

So however Snape acted, it would probably be really toned down compared to how he treated Harry in canon, especially if Draco made if clear that Harry was part of his harem circle of friends.

So Harry would never suspect that Snape was up to anything even if he somehow started to find out about the Sorcerer's Stone.

Which he probably never would have done -- it was a joint effort with Ron and Hermione.

Right -- because finding Fluffy would never happened if it weren't for the Midnight Duel fiasco (which wouldn't have happened if Harry were in Slytherin). There's a chance that Draco might have set a similar thing up with Ron, but without Harry, Ron probably wouldn't have been friends with Hermione, and even Ron and Hermione toghether couldn't have defeated Voldemort in front of the mirror.

Voldemort would have gotten the Philosopher's/Sorcerer's Stone.

...and, presuming he knew how to work it, would have taken over Wizarding England.

And then the world?

Is he interested in that, or just the WW in Great Britan?

I don't see why he'd stop at wizarding Britain -- I imagine that he'd terrorize the Muggles until he'd completely subjected the wizarding world and then take over the Muggle world by force.

Wormtail: What are we going to do tonight Lord Voldemort?

Voldemort: Same thing we do everynight, try to take over the WORLD....

Sorry. It just came out.

1) Alternate Snape possibility. Snape smirks smirky smirks about Harry being in Slytherin and proceeds to corrupt him. Using the word 'corrupt' loosely. Anything dear old dad wouldn't have liked.

2) Something that has always puzzled me. Neither Voldemort nor Quirrell just wanted to find the Stone. I quote, "Use the boy...". How the frag would he have gotten it?

How the frag would he have gotten it? I assume you mean Voldemort/Quirrel. I always figured they didn't know what to expect, and rather hoped it was just sitting there. Then they knew it had something to do with the mirror, but didn't know what. Maybe he said use the boy because if something came shooting out of the mirror ala the climax of Raiders of the Lost Arc, it would be no loss in Voldemort's point of view.

So yeah. Odds are he wouldn't have gotten the stone. Which rather begs the question of how helpful Harry actually was. Although he did get rid of Quirrell.

Harry knew ahead of time that Slytherin wasn't a 'nice' house, so maybe he would still become friends with Ron and Hermione, and maybe it would help with the interhouse unity that will very likely be important in the next book.
